It is September and of course (in our house) that means doing our full home school schedule. This year, I decided we would base our schedule off of time spent doing school. We used to do school where when the kids had completed the minimum in each subject, they were done for the day. So they still have their minimum that they need to do for the day but the school day doesn't end until 2:30pm. If they get done early then they pick what they want and work on it till 2:30.
As a mom and teacher, I have some times during the day when I don't have anything to grade, teach or any laundry to switch. I found myself sitting there either harping on one of the kids to pay attention, focus in and do his work. This was not good on the relationship. I decided since it wasn't much time, I'd check email or Facebook. That resulted in being a time waster and taking longer than I had planned. The boys knew they didn't have my full attention so they would start to play and goof off.
This years solution.....Squats, Step ups, and other functional exercises! I can still focus on the kids and make sure they are doing their work all while getting in some extra movement. I also started having the boys do exercises in between each subject so that they are not sitting there for long periods of time. We do bear crawls, crab walks, frog jumps, jumping jacks, squats, push ups, planks and burpees. It has really been nice. The kids have enjoyed it as much as I am.
In the past, I have just felt like I didn't have time for exercising and homeschooling. I am NOT a morning person and by the time I get the kids to bed, I'm too tired. This year we are making it a family priority. It gets easier each year as the youngest gets older. Then I feel like we can do more family exercising.
I have also started doing my own 1 hour routines, in the afternoon. While I am exercising, the boys are doing their chores. So the house is getting clean while I am working out! This has been great! Then I don't feel like I don't have time to exercise because there is too much cleaning to do.
This has been a great solution so far for getting schoolwork, exercise and cleaning in at the same time!
What do you do to get the most out of your time? I'd love to hear what works for you below!

Labor not with thy Food, nor thy Body.
Food and our bodies shouldn't have to be a battle ground! We shouldn't have to Labor all day thinking about whether or not we are going to eat this or that? Or how we feel guilty because we ate this item that we shouldn't have and on and on the dialog goes and the battle in our minds continues with our food. It also continues with not liking this or that about our bodies. I'm too fat, too ugly, too short..ect..
I bring this up because this month we celebrated, Labor Day! The day that marks, summer coming to an end and those last end of season bbq's. Labor Day, even though now a major shopping day, so a lot of retailors don't get work off, was originally the creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. So let's bring this back to food and our relationship with it. A couple things I have found important in this matter is 1)Loving what is. We don't need to feel guilty or shame over what we should or shouldn't have eaten because we did or didn't eat it so therefore that is the reality of it and we need to accept that reality because that is what truly happened. Does that make sense? A choice was made. It is important that we acknowledge and accept our choice for what we felt we needed at that time based on the knowledge we had. We also know that it is done and we can make a different choice the next time if the previous one did not result in the outcome that we truly desired. 2) By being aware of a food situation that feels uncomfortable or brings on feelings of guilt and shame is the perfect doorway if we open it and explore it to figuring out why we eat when we eat and why we choose the foods we do. The food, the eating, the extra weight is only the symptom to what we really need to work on. Isn't that just beautiful? I think so. Just knowing that helps me to end the battle and love my body so much more. It is so smart to be able to help warn me of when something isn't right. For example, for me, it boils down to a few basic feelings... love, acceptance, fear, loneliness. Even if other feelings come up and can usually deduce them back down to these.
These are just two techniques that I wanted to share to help you not to Labor so hard against food and your body. So this Labor day, take the time to relax. Do some praying and meditating and listening to what your food and your body is trying to help you discover! Rejoice and be grateful for all the strength your body gives you each day and the well being and prosperity you have concerning these. Oh and just a disclaimer, by no means am I suggesting in the title or in this post that exercise (Laboring with our bodies in the form of physical activity) is something we would be best not to do. Quite the contrary. More to come on this later.

I hope you have the best day ever!

Realtionship with Food
As I have been researching and studying and trying to come up with answers for myself on why I do things the way I do concerning food, I have heard it said that we all have a relationship with food. At first I was kind of perplexed thinking, really!?! It seems so one sided. As I have begun to explore this, I have realized it to be truth. I am beginning to realize it is not one sided at all.
I am an emotional eater, and as such, used to believe that food was my best friend. It would comfort me, rejoice with me and soothe any emotion I had. I felt like it was a friend, who didn't talk back, or hurt me. A friend that was completely accepting. I am learning though, that the foods I would choose to emotionally eat with, are not my friends at all! They are wolves dressed in sheep's clothing! How so? Well they act all nice while I'm eating them and I feel like they are helping the situation but in fact, the actual emotion is only temporarily numbed. Put another way, I am just temporarily distracted from feeling it and then it is back. Also, this horrible food (comfort foods) are making a sneak attack! They say they are healing me emotionally while attacking me physically. I think deep down most of us know this when we emotionally eat, but some how can not seem to break free from this lousy friend we have found in food.
I've also heard it said that our relationship to food is the same as our relationship with all other things. I'll give you some examples from my own life. My relationship with food seems to cycle (I'm working on breaking this btw). I'll eat really healthy then something will through me off track (holidays, visitors, traveling, other people's comments) and so then I will eat very naughtily. This can be for one meal or days or weeks. During this time, I'll start to feel guilty. The guilt will get to me to the point where I can start eating healthy again. It is quite similar to the pride cycle that we see in the scriptures actually. It is kind of this binging and purging cycle, control/out of control cycle...however you would like to name it. So anyway, I have noticed that I do this with spending and saving of money. I do this with organization and cleaning. I will declutter our house amazingly and then go on a mini shopping spree over the next couple of months. My personality is very black and white. I am a perfectionist. Are you seeing the pattern? It is all exactly the same to my relationship with food. I'm either on the wagon or off to put it another way.
So 2 things..1) If we examine our relationship with food, we can better understand, love, and accept ourselves. 2)We can also know how to work on and balance the other areas of our lives as well.
So how do we do this exactly?
Some things that have helped me on my journey have been:
1. Relying on the Lord through Prayer, Scripture Study and Journaling on certain versus.
2. Following a 12 step program for food addiction
3. Keeping a food/mood journal
4. Following Geneen Roth's eating guidelines
5. Eating mostly raw, clean, organic foods.
Part of this process for me is to get outside of myself and help others who are struggling as well. Through my website, www.believeandachievehealth.com , I will be offering a Spiritual Eating Support group as well as (Coming Soon) a Freedom from Food Game for those of you who find healthy competition and earning $ great motivation to help you reach your goals and conquer your battles.
Go ahead...Examine your relationship with food. You'll be amazed at what you learn about yourself!

My Integrative Nutrition Experience and How it Opened my Eyes
Today I took my last test for The Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I will officially graduate on Sept 6th, 2013 and will be a Certified Health Coach. I originally went into the program all for myself. I was pretty sure raw food was the way to go but I wanted to make sure I knew everything about nutrition that I possibly could. Plus, I was finding it hard to afford raw food for a family of six and they really didn't want to be 100% raw vegan. Also dealing with traveling and holidays was very difficult for me. I needed answers so I could cure myself from obesity and my constant battle with food and weight.
As I went through the program, I struggled. Learning so many different dietary theories that ALL sounded correct really messed me up. Each week, I would tell my husband and kids we had to eat this way or that way or yes to this food and no to that one. I drove them as Crazy as I had become. I had really thought I had conquered all my food issues, eating disorders and yo yo dieting. The program truly brought to the surface for me that I still had a problem. The program talks a lot about helping others and coaching. After getting past just helping myself, I originally wanted to work with women who were stressed out and needed to lose weight. This discouraged me as I was still up and down with my own weight. How was I to help anyone? They say you only need to be one step ahead of the people you coach, but really? Who would listen to someone who hadn't succeeded in this area herself?
As I dove deeper into the program some of the lecturers really spoke to me, One of them being Geneen Roth. I also learned about Marc David, owner of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, this has and will continue to change my world forever. Through these individuals, my mind and my focus has changed. I realized how much work I need to do on my own food addiction and my need to emotionally eat. I have been doing a lot of internal work on these issues along with relying on my Lord Jesus Christ, who I believe will deliver me from my bondage to food. My focus then changed to not only helping myself overcome this but reaching out and being of service to all food addicts and emotional eaters who like myself, knows exactly what she needs to be doing but has not yet opened the door to find out what has caused these symptoms.
Do you know what your body, your weight, your disordered emotional food addictive cravings and behavior are trying to tell you?
I have been on an amazing path this year that has opened the door and I am figuring it all out. Have I reached my ideal weight yet? No. I am still on my own journey. It is a process. It takes time (I know none of us want to hear that). I am learning to love myself just the way I am at this moment and love the process and what this glorious body is trying to teach me. Most of my success so far has been internally with my thoughts and feelings. I've learned some amazing tools to help myself and others with these issues. If you would like my assistance, because you struggle with these issues as well visit me at Believe and Achieve Health (little did I know when I picked this business name a year ago what a profound affect it would have on me.) For those of you who still need a little bit of proof, follow me regularly as my Emotional, Mental, Spiritual and Physical being transforms completely over this next year. I assure you that you will be as amazed and as excited as I will be. But for those of you, who are sick and tired of struggling and fighting with yourself and with food and don't want to wait another day to see someone else completely heal and recover, contact me today and I can simultaneously help you along your journey as well.
I am grateful for all the amazing teachers I have had so far along this journey and as a chapter closes for me today a new and continued journey begin. I believe in the ability to be happy and healthy, I have achieved so much already and will continue to achieve it.

To be or not to be.....Normal.
I was sitting in a theatre with my husband when an ad came up for mini cars. The ad really caught my attention. Watch it here;
www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R_D4V-Ns3Y
As I thought about this, I realized I DO NOT want to be normal. Occasionally, when I am in social situations and they are all eating the fat laden sugar food that I used to love so much (okay confession: I still love it, it is addictive, I just try not to eat it), I wish for a moment that I could eat that too for the taste and have it not affect my weight, but that is just not so. It does affect me and not just my mood, but my general health and well being. I desire to fit in at least so the situation isn't so awkward. Like I've said before, I am going to the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and we talk about fitting out. By fitting out, you can still be you. You can be an example and an inspiration to others. That is my hope. It still doesn't make it easy, I know! I had my parents come out for Christmas and it was really nice to see them, but every meal seemed awkward. I was trying to share some of my raw dishes that I had been taught and my family have enjoyed. It went over well with my mom who eats pretty healthy already. It didn't go over so well with my dad. I must say though, he was good and ate what I prepared without too much complaining. You could tell though that he was a bit miserable with it though. I did do some clean eating cooked dishes as well and we did go out to eat a few times while they were here, in my defense. So it's not like he was forced to eat only raw vegan the whole time he was here or completely 100% healthy. I did make him a raw German chocolate birthday cake, which was amazing! He did say it was good, but made sure to tell me when he got home and was surrounded by the rest of my extended family that he had his Real, Normal Cake! I was sad at first because I thought...I am such an outcast in this family. I am not normal and I don't do stuff the same way they do. For example, because I'm not just talking about food here, I home school my children and I attend the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints; all of which are considered outside the norm. Plus, I live far away from them and so I'm not even with them on a normal basis.
The point of me sharing all of this with you is so that you can see that, yes, as you start eating healthy and different from the , Norm, you will stand out and it may be hard, BUT...you will feel good about your health and how you look and feel. And that is what is most important because you have to live with you ALL THE TIME! I truly believe that every non-normal thing that I do and practice is because I find it to be right and true and it is what works best for my family and I.
Also, I don't want to be normally obese or have a normal heart attack. I don't want to deal with normal diabetes, normal medications that I have to take everyday for the rest of my life. I don't want to be tired, fatigued and sick on a Normal basis. I just don't want to have all that common, standard, normal American diseases and illness' caused by eating a Normal, Standard American Diet. Nor do I want my kids to be socialized by other kids. (That is a whole different conversation)
My hope and dream for me and my family is to be Amazing and Vibrant. I want us to be healthy, happy and be able to learn and grow as we see fit.
I want you to know, that I am not saying in anyway that what is right for me is right and the only way to navigate this life. I'm just trying to make the point that normal is NOT our best option nor our only option. Does this all make sense? It sure did strike me, right to my center, when I saw the commercial and had been sulking about not fitting in that well.
It is this very issue or situations, circumstances, feelings and emotions like these that keep us from achieving what we really want in our hearts to become. So it is this sense of being normal that we need to overcome in order to really be set free to achieve the goals, hopes and dreams we have for ourselves.

Disrespecting Our Bodies
Today is a GREAT day! The day began with me waking up early because I couldn't sleep. This NEVER happens to me. Well I guess it does since it did today but this was a first. Honestly, I hope it is not the last either. Now I did still get a good amount of sleep. I feel well rested. I got up and got right on my treadmill. I walked at a good pace for 3.5 miles while I lifted some 5lb dumbbells. While I was walking I like to listen to my Integrative Nutrition courses. Today's message really resonated with me. The speaker said something to the affect of, when you eat something that is not good for your health you are disrespecting your body. WOW! When you put it like that it took on a whole new meaning for me. We hate it when other people disrespect us but I fear we are doing it to ourselves ALL the time! And not just with food, but with our self talk. If a friend said some of the things to you that you say to yourself about you, How long would they be your friend? Or if you were constantly serving people proccessed packaged foods when they came over instead of a home cooked meal, How often would they come?
I've been hearing a lot lately about our bodies not being our enemy but our best friend. I know with my own weight issues, up to this point, I have not believed this. But a new light has been put on this. Our bodies are so smart! It can only keep us balanced for so long and if we are telling it how horrible things are then it will help us depart out of the circumstance, therefore bringing on disease and sickness. Food can be a healer or a slow killer. It all depends on what you are fueling it with. I heard a story once from Russell James that there was once a homeless man who was offered a cheeseburger. He graciously declined. The giver could hardly believe it and asked him why. The homeless man said, "If I eat things that will hurt and kill off my body, where will I live?" This struck me deep through to my heart. I believe my body is a Temple given to me by God. It is a precious gift and if I put bad foods and thoughts into it not only am I disrespecting myself but I am disrespecting God and this precious gift he has given me. I am taking this gift of life here on this earth and slowly committing suicide, therefore not achieving the mission he sent me hear to accomplish.
I know this is all pretty deep stuff today that I am speaking about, but it has been an "aha" moment for me. It is times like this that I am able to solidify my goals and my purpose. I hope these insights will help you as well and maybe it won't take you as long to achieve your goals.
Stay positive...Have Happy Thoughts...and fuel your body with the best foods nature has to offer!

Loving Relationships
Do you ever find it harder to eat right and/or exercise if you are having a hard time in a relationship? I know II do. I am definitely an emotional eater. If things are going well then it is reason to celebrate with restaurant food. If things are bad, well then I just deserve a candy bar to help me with the pain. This thinking still comes out of me sometimes but it is much more controlled these days. Or at least so I thought. How about this one.....When one of the kiddos are driving me crazy I have noticed I'm not turning to food like I used to but now it is to my phone and let's just numb the pain or agony by scrolling through facebook or pinterest or email...just one more time today. Then a one minute thing has turned into 30 min or more. So how do we break these cycles. Well I am finding just recognizing and admitting to myself that that is what I am doing has helped. So my goals for this are to try reading a scripture verse instead or doing 20 jumping jacks or just closing my eyes and counting to 20. I think the first two would be more beneficial though and help me complete more than one goal at a time.
I've been learning about relationships this week in school and how if we are having issues there then it doesn't matter how good we are eating or how much we are exercising our health will be impacted negatively. Looking back I agree that this has been true in my life. How about yours? Do you agree?
So I have been trying to do things to build up my relationships, knowing if I do this not only will my relationships improve but the eating and exercise and my general health and well being will too. So what have I been doing? Well with one of my sons, I have a really hard time. He is very different than me and can't seem to get things done in a timely manner. Drives me CRAZY! So I have been trying to compliment him more. I have been taking notice of the things he does that are great and the talents that he has.
If you are married, you know that strengthening that relationship constantly is important. So I have been so excited this Christmas season to do a 24 days till Christmas little love thing for my man. I got the idea off of datingdivas.com I made up 24 cards. Some have little love notes on them, some are service oriented and others are date night themed. I know he likes it but I think I am getting more out of it than he is just because it is so fun to be the giver.
So my point is that health and wellness can improve through strengthening relationships. What are you doing to strengthen yours?
